FINAL REFLECTIONS
Experiences
From the first assignment, in which students learn how to use illustrator and learn about impressive character design, to the final assignment, which includes story structure and animation, this module seems to have covered the outlines of character and illustration. Despite my confidence in my ability to operate Illustrator, I felt very difficult especially since it was my first experience drawing a comic book.
Observation
In this module, we learned especially about characters and stories, and in the process of researching them, I discovered many things. Western animated characters, including Disney characters, show large changes in facial expressions, especially the exaggerated deformation of the eyes and mouth. In contrast, Asian characters, such as Japanese manga and Chinese characters, are characterized more by their personality traits and abilities than by changes in facial expressions. Another characteristic of Asian characters is that many of them are expressionless or smiley.
Findings
I believe these features is based on actual cultural background. The culture of hiding or expressing emotions, differences in eye and mouth size by race, body language, and other factors affect creative works. I am Asian, so I don't feel it unnatural to have less direct expression of emotion through facial expressions. On the contrary, I feel more uncomfortable with Western animation, which is too exaggerated. It is not that one is better than the other, personally I would like to cherish the globally acclaimed culture of Japanese animation.
I also notice that there are a great many tricks in the way the cartoons are presented. The temporal expressions are expressed in the margins, and appropriate sound effects are added to create a scene. I could not reproduce it in the task3 with my ability, but it seems that when drawing action scenes, they sometimes dare to make the lines thicker to add contrast. Manga is still a new culture, less than 100 years old, but during that time various rules were established by great cartoonists such as Osamu Tezuka and Fujiko Fujio. And it will continue to develop, just as the vertical layout of Webtoon was invented because of popularization of smartphones.
