REFLECTIONS
ExperiencesMy journey of learning typography was very esoteric and challenging. First, because of the different alphabets used in English and my native language, it was not clear to me what typeface was beautiful and what typeface was ugly. In such a context, being given the first 10 beautiful examples of fonts and learning the basic design rules will be a great guide for the future. Although there were many daunting tasks, among them, Task 3A, in which I designed my own font, was very interesting to me and I spent a lot of time actively working on it. Since all final outcomes are produced within a limited time frame, some aspects are not yet perfect. I would like to practice so that I can create better designs quickly.
Observation
With the tasks given, I have learned to observe the detailed rules for visibility and aesthetics. For example, the max height should be different for upper and lower case letters, the thickness of the vertical and horizontal lines are unified respectively for readability. Various elements are compounded and overlapped to form the design of the letters. I continue to develop my own aesthetic sense by seeing more good designs.
Findings
Throughout this semester, I have found aware of the difference between ornamentation and typography. I am a fairly practical person, so I am always inclined to use illustrative motifs to express the meaning of the letters. However, in learning the basics of typography, I know that is incorrect. It is needed to value the feeling we get from abstract things such as the thickness of the letters, the presence or absence of serifs, and the impression of the shape while adhering to the basic rules. This is similar to when I learned about color. I believe that even in actual pracitcal situations, basic knowledge makes a clear difference in the quality of the work. Also I feel it is important to always design with an objective point of view.
