LECTURES

All lectures 1 to 6 completed in Task 1 and Task 2.

INSTRUCTION

Typo Task 3B Type Design & Communication (Sticker Lettering)

Outline of the assignment

With the knowledge and experience gained in the Exercises, Task 1 and Task 2, synthesize and apply the learning in the following tasks:
Your task is to express typographically a social message, greeting or the like, that is relevant to the campus community at Taylor’s University or society at large.

Task;
  1. Set a margin. Create columns and rows.
  2. Sketch your ideas down.
  3. You may create lettering, modify existing letter or use existing type to communicate your message.
  4. Save as PNG (without background and with a 7pt white outline) and as a PDF, upload the PNG to your e-portfolio and embed the PDF (by uploading it first to your G-Drive) in your e-portfolio.
  5. Screen grab your phone with the sticker sent.
We have to ensure our font design is following the basics of Typography;
  • Research Lettering
  • Read article provided in Module Info.
  • Select greeting
  • Sketch 5 options
  • 512 pixel size of the final artwork
  • First design your lettering using BW only
  • Introduce color (Taylor's) Red, White & Black
  • You must not use gradients only flat tones
  • Use the Taylor's Mark in your sticker
  • Not to use existing typefaces directly, as this is a lettering

Process of Work

1. Idea Sketch

Fig.1: Sketches #1 - 3

Fig.2: Sketches #4 - 5

I created sketches. My favorites are #2 and #4. After receiving feedback from the professor, I decided to go with #4. However, it was specified that figurative motifs such as spider webs be removed.

*More details are provided in the feedback section below.

2. Digitization

Fig.3: Deformation of the Idea before Digitization

Adjust the balance of the letters since they are no longer square now because the webs are removed.

Fig.4: Digitization Ver.1

Creating variations with processed shadows, outlines, etc., I made a trial-and-error approach to improving the design.

Fig.5: Variations

When the path is offset, the whitespace in the inner margin of the character should be deleted. The areas marked in red in the figure below have been removed.

Fig.6: Feedback on Week12 (16/6/2022)

The following design was then completed after some processing, including the addition of reflections.

Fig.7: Digitization Ver.2

However, it is not a superior lettering design. It was at this point that I decided to rework the lettering design.

Fig.8: Rework Process 1

Rewrite the design using Illustrator's lettering brushes.

Fig.9: Rework Process 2

Decoration added. I reused the liquid dripping element from idea sketch #2 which was also my favorite.

Fig.10: Digitization Ver.3 (19/6/2022)

My third design is complete. This will be further brushed up based on feedback from week13.

From the feedback, the background color should be Taylors Red and diluted pink. The logo can deform (put some liquid as same as other letter).

Fig.11: Rejected Ideas (Utilizing Gradients)

The assignment forbids the use of gradients, but I thought of an idea using them and created a test. Actually this liquid-like dripping area is impressed from blood. Anyway, back to the next design.

Fig.12: Digitization Ver.4 (21/6/2022)

Here is my final design. The overall color is adjusted.

3. Register the Design as a Sticker (Telegram)

The background of the completed image data is made transparent and saved as a png. Then, proceed with registration at the Telegram sticker bot.

Fig.13: Registration Process

All operations can be performed in the chat room.

  1. Send "/start"
  2. Send "/newpack"
  3. Choose a name
  4. Send the image data
  5. Send an emoji that corresponds
  6. Send "/publish"
  7. Set the download link
  8. Done

FEEDBACK

Week 12

General feedback: Use only given color (Taylor's Red + monotone).

Specific feedback: When the path is offset, the whitespace in the inner margin of the character should be deleted.

Week 13

General feedback: Not to use gradient. Can use flat shadow.

Specific feedback: The background color should be Taylors Red and diluted pink. The logo can deform (put some liquid as same as other letter).

REFLECTIONS

Experiences
Unlike the typeface, the handwritten design was a challenge. If the shape is too broken, it will be difficult to read, but if it is made only with shapes, it will look like a font typeface. We students had to balance and place the letters throughout the square space but it was quite difficult.

Observation
It is easier to create an atmosphere with graphical elements and colors. However, in this assignment, those were limited. The "Happy Halloween" I chose was somewhat inconsistent, and I wasn't sure which way to go with the design: happy or scared. I still feel that my proficiency in lettering is still lacking compared to the topic of font design.

Findings
From my further research, lettering often led to the design with stroke and stroke order in mind. As with the type face, if the thin and thick areas are regular (e.g., vertical lines are thicker and horizontal lines are thinner), the design will be more stable. I also felt that it was better to design with pen and paper rather than digitally when one is not familiar with lettering.

きれいな欧文書体とデザイン (Beautiful typeface and design)

きれいな欧文書体とデザイン / 甲谷 一 (著)

The main feature of this book was visually explaining of the "design characteristics" of each typeface and each character, mention the historical background of classic and masterpiece typefaces. The book lectures on the practical knowledge in the production of alphabet typefaces used for logo production and other purposes. This book is a technical book for Japanese designers that can be used immediately to design typefaces to meet their design objectives.
