Task 3 / Type Exploration and Application
28.9.2022 - 23.11.2022 (Week 8 - Week 13)
Rationale
Inspired by the original font strokes of an animation, this font "Magical Block Mono" is versatile and can be used in designs for all kinds of fantasy creations. It can also be switched between upper and lower case for readable (actual alphabet) and illegible (fictional style), making it useful for websites, games, and other gimmicky installations.

REFLECTIONS
ExperiencesThe journey of learning typography, which began in Semester 1 and continued through Semester 2, has had many challenges but has provided me with very interesting knowledge. I am a foreigner and my native language does not use the alphabet. In such a situation, it was very beneficial for me to learn about typography and I felt that I grew technically through the tasks.
Observation
One of the most important things I learned this time was from task 3, to look at my own work objectively. Sometimes people are so stubborn about what they create that they refuse to see its weaknesses. I had my design rejected once for this assignment and had to create it again from the beginning. As it turned out, that was a good thing and I believe it shows in the final results. Detailed design knowledge is important, but I think this experience is more important and fundamental to creativity.
Findings
Throughout this semester, I have become more aware that typography is not just a layout of letters, but a design rooted in historical context and culture. Readability should be good, but as Tasks 1 and 2 show, typography is not only about making letters legible but also about creating letters as a single design. Also, there is a rationale for the strokes of the letters. For example, there is a writing order for Chinese characters. By writing in the stroke order with a brush, and by following the rules for stops and jumps, the overall balance of the character is unified. In this respect, the alphabet is not as strict as Chinese in its stroke order. However, as a character, I learned that it is important to set detailed rules for the uniformity of the entire font design, rather than simply imitating the shape.
