LECTURES
Week 2 Film sound
The mixing of sound elements below creates an audio setting that supports the action and engages the spectators.
1. Speech
Dialogue: Conversation between characters in the movie.
Voice-over: The voice of an unseen narrator speaking.
These are of utmost importance in the story.
2. Sound effects
Ambiance: Audio refers to the background noise present at a given scene or a location.
Hard or "cut" effects: Almost every sound we hear at the movies that isn't dialogue or music is a sound effect.
Train sliding doors open and close, footsteps, trains moving on tracks, the ambiance in a train, etc.
3. Music
Music in a movie is to enhance the dramatic narrative and the emotional impact.
Audio Dubbing
1. Dubbing
"Dubbing" or "Automated Dialog Replacement (ADR)", is the process of re-recording dialogue after the filming process to improve audio quality or reflect dialogue changes.
2. Foley
Foley: A sound effects technique for synchronous effects or live effects.
*The Foley technique is named for "Jack Foley", a sound editor at Universal Studios.
Sound Design
1. Time stretching/ compression
Time Stretching/ compression changes the length of audio without altering its pitch.
2. Pitch Shifting
Process of adjusting the pitch of an audio signal upwards or downwards, for both corrective (getting a vocal perfectly in tune, for example) and purely creative (changing the character of a drum loop, say) purposes.
3. Reversing
The end of the audio will be heard first and the beginning last. Reverse audio changes the whole feeling and rhythm of the sound.
4. Layering
Arranging several separate sounds together, in such a way the overall effect is of a single complete sound.
INSTRUCTION
Project 1 Exercise 1: Audio Dubbing
The assignment goal
Sync the required audios in Premiere Pro (Speech & Sound effects only, no music)
Process of Work
Firstly the video in its silent state opens as a new project in Premier Pro.
Fig.2-1: Edit in Premier Pro
Adds background sounds and sound effects to a sequence.
I adjusted distant sounds to be quieter, and the sound of the object to which the eye is directed was louder.
Because the setting is outdoors, no echo was added to the voice.
Fig.2-2: In Progress, No voice (8/9/2022)
I trimmed my voice recorded with a smartphone and inserted it into the video.

Week 4 Exercise 2 Sound Shaping
This assignment is an exercise in applying environmental effects to three given sound files.
Sound 1 Original
Sound 2 Original
Sound 3 Original

Fig.2-5: Editing sound waveforms
For example, a telephone voice can be reproduced by eliminating sounds outside the 300-3400 Hz range that do not pass through the line by tampering with the waveform.
Underground cave, Inside of a closet, Phone calls, Toilet environment recreated.
Sound 1 Underground cave
Sound 2 Underground cave
Sound 3 Underground cave
Sound 1 Voice coming from inside of a closet
Sound 2 Voice coming from inside of a closet
Sound 3 Voice coming from inside of a closet
Sound 1 Voice of phone call
Sound 2 Voice of phone call
Sound 3 Voice of phone call
Sound 1 Voice of toilet bathroom
Sound 2 Voice of toilet bathroom
Sound 3 Voice of toilet bathroom
Week 10 Exercise 3 Sound Design
This assignment is an exercise in applying environmental effects to 3 given sound files.
Fig.2-6: Import Sound files to Audition
In Audition, the pitch shifter can be used to change the pitch of sounds and the speed of sound files.

The reverse playback using reverse and the normal explosion sound are connected to create a realistic explosion sound.

REFLECTIONS
ExperiencesIn this project 1, we learned specifically about sound. In the audio dubbing, we learned the importance of ambient sounds and sound effects to make the video more realistic, as well as voice acting. Then we learned about sound effects and now I am able to synthesize my own sound to complete even a silent video.
Observation
The way voices and sounds are heard varies depending on external factors such as reverberation and pitch. Since they appear as sound waveforms, we found that it is possible to create a realistic sound by applying effects with sound editing software such as Audition. For example, the voice on the phone is cut off at frequencies above and below a certain level, creating a unique atmosphere on the phone that is different from the actual voice.
Findings
Not only sound production but also the detail of the ambient sounds is important. Our daily lives are filled with sounds that we hear without being aware of them, such as the buzzing of people and the sound of cars driving outside. However, when they are absent in visual media such as film, they can instantly lack realism. I suppose it is possible to create a more realistic image by layering multiple background sounds and adding sound effects to even the most trivial movements.
